Ruskin Spear [1911-1990] – Biography

Ruskin Spear was born in Hammersmith in 1911 and studied art locally before attending the Royal College of Art in 1930 under Sir William Rothenstein. He went on to teach at the RCA from 1948 to 1975.

Taking influences from Walter Sickert, Camden Town Group and the Euston Road School he produced a body of work often telling a story with elements of humour. He often painted characters in local pubs and sporting events around London. Many UK galleries hold his work including the National Portrait Gallery and Imperial War Museum.

In 1979 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire. he died in Hammersmith in 1990.

He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, Associate of the Royal College of Art and the London Group.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London Group, Leicester Galleries, U.S.A., Australia, Scandinavia, Moscow and Leningrad, to name a few.
