Biography – Arthur Briscoe [1873-1943]
Arthur Briscoe was a painter in oil, watercolour and etching of maritime subjects. He was born in Birkenhead in 1873 and educated at Shrewsbury School. He studied art at the Slade under Fred Brown and at Julian’s in Paris and then spent his time sailing.
Arthur Briscoe painted and wrote on yachting subjects including Handbook on Sailing under the nom de plume of Clove Hitch. Most of his etchings show sailing ships and his vigorous compositions present an invaluable historical record of the workings of the last great commercial vessels.
