Montague Dawson [1890-1973] – Biography
He was born in 1890 in London and was the the grandson of artist Henry Dawson. At the beginning of World War 1 he joined the Royal Navy. He met the artist Charles Napier Hemy who was to influence his artistic career. During the war his work was used by the Graphic magazine and the Sphere newspaper.
When the war ended Dawson made being a commercial artist a profession. He specialised in historical clipper ships in big seas and powerful skies.
On the outbreak of the Second World War he became a war artist providing illustrations to newspapers.
During his career he exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Academy and his work was purchased by many well known collectors.
From the 1930’s he lived in Milford on Sea in Hampshire which is close to our gallery in Lymington.
There is also a painting of HMS Hood in Boldre Church which is close by.

He painted deep water clipper ship portraits and warship scenes.
