Thomas Somerscales [1842-1927] – Biography
Born in Kingston upon Hull in 1842 Thomas Somerscales was the son of a shipmaster and his uncle was an amateur painter. He was employed as a teacher in the Royal Navy onboard H.M.S. Cumberland, HMS Zealous and HMS Clio. While traveling he became ill and decided to leave the Royal Navy and live in Chile. Here he taught at the Mackay School in Valparaiso and starting painting professionally. In 1892 he returned to England, over the next thirty-five years he was still better known as an artist in Chile.
