Charles Ernest Cundall [1890-1971] – Biography
Born in Stretford in Lancashire. Originally he trained as a pottery and stained glass designer for Pilkington’s, under Gordon Forsyth. He went on to study art at the Manchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art in 1912. After seeing action in the First World War he trained at the Slade School of Art and later in Paris.
Traveling to Italy, Sweden, Russia and Spain he painted landscapes in the early 1920’s.
During World War II he worked for the War Artist’s Advisory Committee and later as an artist for the Admiralty painting Merchant Navy vessels. He also worked for the Air Ministry painting the RAF including the ‘Battle of Britain’.
