Frank Henry Mason [1875-1965] – Biography
He was born in Hartlepool and was educated as a cadet at the HMS Conway naval School. After spending time at sea he became a marine engineer and lived in Scarborough.
With an interest in art he studied at the Scarborough School or Art with regular visits to the artists community at Staithes. As his artistic career took off he stopped engineering and became a founder member of the Staithes Art Club.
In the First World War Frank Mason appointed as a shipping war artist while in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve with over fifty of his paintings in the Imperial War Museum.
After the war he traveled abroad on many trips and painted different subject mainly in watercolour. He was them commissioned to design Rail Posters for the leading railway companies including British Rail, London Underground Group, London Midland, North Eastern Railways, Scottish, Great Northern Railways, and Great Western Railways. He also produce poster designs for ocean liner companies.
