Keith Shackleton [1923-2015] – Biography
Keith Hope Shackleton was born in 1923, spending his early years in Australia. On returning to London he attended Oundle School before serving in the RAF and then working as a pilot for his family’s aviation company. He was an artist and illustrator with his main focus towards nature in particular marine life and birds in the Arctic and Antarctic.
Sir Ernest Shackleton was one of his relations and he was good friends with the artist Sir Peter Scott who was the son of Captain Scott. Both were founder members of the Wildlife and Wetland Trust.
In the 1960’s he co-presented BBC Animal Magic with Johnny Morris and later in the 1970’s Animals in Action for Anglia TV. Around this time he became a full time painter and from 1969 made many voyages on the Lindblad Exployer to the Arctic, Antarctic, South Atlantic and South Pacific. He was interested in the RSPB’s Save the Albatross campaign in the Southern Ocean.
Keith Shackleton was a good sailor and crewing on an International Dinghy won the Prince of Wales Cup many times. His technical sailing knowledge is evident in his yachting paintings. Keith Shackleton died in 2015.
