Paul Lucien Maze [1887-1979] – Biography
He was born in Le Havre to French parents and later went on to school in Southampton. His father, as an art collector, introduced him to Claude Monet, Pierre-Augustus Renoir, Raoul Dufy and Camille Pissarro.
After an interesting Wartime career he resumed his artistic interests in the Paris art scene with Pierre Bonnard, Andre Derain, Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac and Edouard Vuillard who encouraged Maze to use pastels.
He has become known as “The last of the Post Impressionists” with a wide range of subjects many very British and sporting in nature. These include Cowes yachting regatta, Henley Regatta, Goodwood and Trooping of the Colour.
Paul Maze became friends with Sir Winston Churchill after meeting him in the trenches and later became his artistic adviser. He advised him on his painting and drawing techniques.
His work can be seen in British galleries including The Fitzwilliam in Cambridge, The Tate and Glasgow Art Gallery.
