Thomas Luny [1759-1837] – Biography
He was born in Cornwall and at the age of eleven he moved to London where he became apprentice to the well known marine artist Francis Holman. On leaving Holman’s studio in 1783 he started to exhibit at the Royal Academy.
During his artistic career he painted may sea battles, harbours and portraits with many commissions coming from the British East India Company.
In 1807 he moved to Teignmouth in Devon where he continued to paint but later suffered from arthritis in both hands. However he still managed to produce 3,000 paintings in his lifetime.
