Pierre Adolphe Valette [1876-1942] – Biography
Valette was an Impressionist artist. He was born in Saint-Etienne in 1876. He studied at Ecole Municipale de Beaux-Arts before coming to England and studding at the Birkbeck Institute. During 1905 he moved to the North West and while working for a Manchester printing company and ecclesiastical decorator studied at the Manchester School of art in the evenings. Later he taught there giving demonstrations. At this time the artist L.S.Lowry became a pupil of Valette showing him new techniques with his impressionistic style.
During 1920 he stopped teaching due to ill health but continued to paint in the Bolton and Manchester area. In 1928 he moved Paris but eventually retired to Blace en Beaujolais and he died in 1942.
He is best known for his Impressionist city views of Manchester and being L.S.Lowry’s teacher. Some of his know paintings are “India House Manchester”, “Hansom Cab at All Saints”, “Albert Square, Manchester”, “Oxford Road, Manchester”, and “Windsor Bridge on the Irwell”.
