Biography – Charles Napier Hemy [1841-1917]
He was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and studied at the Newcastle Art School and at the Antwerp Academy. One of three brothers including Thomas Marie Madawaska Hemy [1852-1937] and Bernard Benedict Hemy [1845-1913], who were also marine artists.
Early in his career in the 1870s he lived and painted in London but in 1881 moved and painted in Falmouth in Cornwall. During this time he painted many coastal scenes with fisherfolk and some landscapes.
Some of his best paintings are in the Tate Gallery including the London River [1904] and Pilchards [1897].
Hemy died in 1917 in Falmouth Cornwall.

He painted marine subject including fishing boats in rough seas. Some subjects include St Mawes, Falmouth, Tynemouth, Fishermen, River Thames, Yacht racing, and Lighthouses.

‘C.Napier Hemy’ or ‘C.N.H’.
