Frank Auerbach 1931-2024 – Biography

Frank Helmut Auerbach was born in Germany in 1931 to Jewish parents, becoming a British subject in 1947. One of the leading names in the ‘School of London’ group along with Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Educated at St Martin’s School of Art, the Royal College of Art and Borough Polytechnic.

He was a figurative painter focusing on portraits and studies of the Camden Town area of London.

Auerbach taught at the Slade School and Camberwell School of Art.

Frank Auerbach painted in oils on canvas and board and acrylic along with drawing in graphite.

Died  in London in 2024 at the age of age of 93.
