Lucy Kemp-Welch  [1869-1958] – Biography 

She was born in Bournemouth in 1869 and studied at the Hubert von Herkomer Art School in Bushey. During her early years she travelled to the New Forest with her father and sister where she was inspired by the wild ponies and landscape. Further  holidays in the New Forest inspired her paintings including ‘Gypsy Horse Drovers’, ‘Colt Hunting in the New Forest’ and ‘Timber Hauling in the New Forest’, many of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy.

From 1905 she ran the Herkomer School and from the mid 1920’s followed the Sanger’s Circus depicting the performers and animals.

She is also known for her illustrations of the ‘Black Beauty’ book.

Sister of Edith Margaret Kemp-Welch who was an artist and etcher.

She mainly painted animals especially ponies and heavy horses.
