Dame Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) – Biography
Born in 1903, in Wakefield, Yorkshire, Dame Barbara Hepworth was an English artist and sculptor who studied at Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art – London in the 1920s. Her artistic career spanned multiple relationships, including marriage to sculptor John Skeaping from 1925-1933. In 1931, she fell in love with painter Ben Nicholson, whom she eventually divorced in 1933. Barbara Hepworth was a key figure in the St Ives art colony during World War II and co-founded the Unit One movement with Nicholson. She was renowned for her modern sculptures, drawings and lithographs before tragically dying in a studio fire in 1975.
