Biography – Eileen Mayo [1906-1994]
Eileen Mayo was born in Norwich in 1906. She studied art at the Slade School in London and the Chelsea Polytechnic under Henry Moore.
She was taught linocut printing by Claude Flight at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, while working as a life model, and then exhibited at the Redfern Gallery Exhibition of British Linocuts.
Mayo undertook further study when she moved to Paris in 1940 and attended Academie Montmartre under Fernand Leger. After this she taught at Saint Martins School of Art and also the Sir John Cass College in London.
She is also know for her appearance in paintings by Laura Knight, Bernard Meninsky, Duncan Grant and Dod Proctor as a model.
In 1952 Eileen Mayo emigrated to Australia where she taught at the National Art School in Sydney. She went on to become a founder member of Sydney printmakers. In the late 1950’s she designed a one shilling stamp of a platypus for Australia Post.
In the early 1960’s she moved to New Zealand and from 1965-1972 taught at the University of Canterbury. She again designed stamps including moths and fish for the New Zealand Post Office.
During her life she wrote and illustrated many books including “Shells and How They Live” and “The Story of Living Things and their Evolution”.
In 1994 she became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
