Vanessa Bell (1879-1961) – Biography
Vanessa Bell co-founded the Friday Club in 1906 with like-minded artists to create a space in London that prioritised painting. She was inspired by Post-Impressionist exhibitions organised by Roger Fry and incorporated their bold colours and forms into her own artworks. In 1914, Bell transitioned to abstraction in her art, departing from traditional narrative painting styles. Vanessa Bell rejected the conventions of Victorian feminine ideals, instead focusing on innovation and self-expression. She designed book jackets for many of her sister Virginia Woolf’s publications with Hogarth Press, showcasing her versatility as a designer.
Some of her notable works include:
“Studland Beach” (1912)
“The Tub” (1918)
“Interior with Two Women” (1932)
Portraits of notable women: Virginia Woolf (three paintings), Aldous Huxley, and David Garnett
Bell collaborated with Duncan Grant on murals for Berwick Church in Sussex (1940-42).
In 1932, she was commissioned to create a dinner service with Grant for
Kenneth Clark, which resulted in the “Famous Women Dinner Service” – a collection of 50 plates featuring portraits of women throughout history.
Related artists: Percy Wyndham-Lewis, Roger Fry, John Emms, Arthur Batt, Arthur Wardle
