Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) – Biography
He was born on in 1894 in Denham in Buckinghamshire and was the son of painters Sir William Nicholson and Mabel Pryde. He was exempted from World War I military service due to asthma and moved to St Ives, Cornwall, in 1939.
Educated at the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1910-1911) and studied with Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, Mark Gertler, and Edward Wadsworth. Ben Nicholson married three times :Winifred Roberts, Barbara Hepworth & Felicitas Vogler.
He was influenced by Synthetic Cubism and Rousseau’s style and he became chair of the Seven and Five Society in 1926.
Along his artistic path he met artists such as Mondrian, Picasso, and Henry Moore who influenced him and later created wood reliefs, including “White Relief” in 1933.
Ben Nicholson won prestigious awards, including the Carnegie Prize in 1952 and Guggenheim International painting prize in 1956. He received the British Order of Merit (OM) in 1968.
He died in 1982, at his home in Pilgrim’s Lane, Hampstead
