Bryan Pearce (1929-2006) – Biography
He was born in St Ives, Cornwall in 1929 where his father was a butcher and mayor of St Ives, and his mother was a painter from a local family. Bryan Peace suffered from phenylketonuria which affected his brain development. During his attendance of a special needs school he began drawing and painting in watercolours with guidance from his mother and local artists. He continued art training at the Leonard Fuller’s St Ives School of Painting (1953-1957). Many of his paintings depicted St Ives using a flat style with bright colours ands with dark outlines.
Bryan Pearce was a member of the Penwith Society of Arts and Newlyn Society of Artists and had his first solo exhibitions in 1959 at the Newlyn Gallery and later in London at the St Martin’s Gallery in 1962. Further exhibitions were held at Penwith Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford.
He also produced a quantity of screenprints and etchings.
