Ken Howard (1932-2022) – Biography
He was born in London in 1932 and studied at Kilburn Grammar School, Hornsey College of Art from 1949 to 1953 and the Royal College of Art from 1955 to 1958. Ken Howard served in the Royal Marines during National Service 1953-1955 and won a British Council Scholarship to Florence in 1958. He became an Official War Artist to Northern Ireland in 1973 and worked with the British Army in various locations, including Hong Kong, Cyprus, and Canada.
He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1983 and became a Royal Academician (RA) in 1991. Howard paints in a traditional style with strong observation and draughtsmanship, depicting light that has become a key element of his work. His subject features nudes, city scenes, and reflections of light, influenced by urban landscapes and the use of horizontal and vertical structures.
He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010 and was elected President of the New English Art Club from 1998 to 2003.
Ken Howard’s work is held in public collections, including the National Army Museum, Guildhall Art Gallery, and Imperial War Museum.
