John Bratby (1928-1992) – Biography
Born 1928 in Wimbledon near London. He studied art at Kingston College of Art (1949-1950) and the Royal College of Art ( until 1954). John Bratby is considered the founder of kitchen sink realism, a movement that uses everyday objects as subjects. He began painting in this style in the early 1950s. Bratby’s paintings often featured bright colours and captured middle-class family life. Faces of his subjects were often depicted as desperate and unsightly. Collaborated with Alec Guinness on the film The Horse’s Mouth (1958). John Bratby elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1971. Bratby traveled and made paintings of cities visited alongside intimate portraits of his wife and self-portraits, developing an “economy of line” style.
Bratby’s work fell out of favour with Pop art, but has gained renewed interest over recent years. Paul McCartney is a collector and in 1967 had given Bratby two hours in his studio, resulting in three portraits. Bratby was also a writer.
