William Edward Cooke [1811-1880] – Biography
He was born in London in 1811 the son of the line engraver George Cooke. E.W.Cooke was a good draughtsman when young, mainly of marine subjects. He produced a series of engravings at the age of 18 entitled “Shipping and Craft”.
He was guided and advise by leading artists of the day including David Roberts, Clarkson Stanfield and later lessons in oil from James Stark. Cooke first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1834.
Traveling extensively E.W.Cook painted the Netherlands, Venice, North Africa, Scandinavia and more locally the Isle of Wight.
E.W.Cooke also had an interest in natural history and geology and became a fellow of Geological Society, Zoological Society and the Royal Society.
Where did he Sell?
He sold direct, at art dealers and exhibitions. We have seen gallery labels from Frost & Reed, Arthur Ackerman, Agnews and provenance from auction houses including Bonhams Auctioneers, Sothebys Auction and Christies Auctions.
