Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988) – Biography
Julian Trevelyan was born into a prominent family with liberal and historical roots and he was the only child to survive to adulthood. He went on to study English Literature at Trinity College in Cambridge. Trevelyan moved to Paris to become an artist so he could hone his skills in etching under Stanley William Hayter’s guidance.
He worked alongside Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. Trevelyan became a Surrealist and exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition in London. He taught history of art and etching at Chelsea School of Art and then the Royal College of Art, where he later became Head of the Etching Department. Trevelyan was a pioneer in modern print techniques, influencing generations of artists, including David Hockney and Ron Kitaj.
During World War II, Julian Trevelyan became a Camouflage Officer, using his artistic skills to create effective desert camouflage for the Royal Engineers.
He was elected a Royal Academician in 1987 and became a senior fellow at the Royal College of Art in 1986. Trevelyan’s first wife was Ursula Darwin and he then married artist Mary Fedden.
Julian Trevelyan’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including a major retrospective at the Royal College of Art in 1998. His prints are held in the collection of the Tate Gallery.
