David Bomberg (1890-1957) – Biography
David Bomberg was a British painter and member of the Whitechapel Boys, a group of artists who studied at the Slade School of Art. He developed a style combining cubism and futurism, characterised by geometric compositions, limited colours, and angular shapes. Bomberg was expelled from the Slade School in 1913 due to his unconventional approach, which challenged the conventional artistic norms of the time.
After being disillusioned with modernism, David Bomberg shifted to a more figurative style in the 1920s, focusing on portraits and landscapes drawn from nature. He traveled extensively through the Middle East and Europe, developing an expressionist technique. Bomberg taught at Borough Polytechnic (now London South Bank University) from 1945 to 1953, influencing notable students such as Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff.
