Edward Bawden CBE RA (1903-1989) – Biography
Edward Bawden was born in 1903 in Braintree in Essex. He studied at the Cambridge Municipal Art School and the Royal College of Art in London. He is know for his painting, illustration, graphic design, and metalwork. During his childhood he developed an interest in calligraphy and the work of Victorians like Aubrey Beardsley and William Morris. In 1928, Edward Bawden created tiles for the London Underground, which were exhibited at the International Building Trades Exhibition. He also worked as a commercial artist, producing illustrations for prominent companies, including London Transport and Penguin Books. During World War II, Edward Bawden served as an official war artist, creating artworks in France, North Africa, and the Middle East. He witnessed key events like the evacuation from Dunkirk and bombed cities, capturing their essence.
Edward Bawden married Charlotte Epton in 1932, a potter and artist, with whom he had two children who would also become artists. The couple lived in Great Bardfield, Essex, where they developed a strong artistic community. Bawden experimented with metalwork, creating garden furniture that reflected his love of nature and design. His work during this period was characterised by its simplicity and elegance. In the 1950s, Bawden continued to create murals, including a notable series for the First Class lounge of the P&O liner Oronsay.
Edward Bawden also designed book covers and contributed illustrations to publications like The Listener. Throughout his career, Bawden taught at the Royal College of Art and later became a tutor at the Royal Academy Schools. His work is now held in high regard, with notable pieces exhibited in major collections like the Fry Art Gallery and The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum.
Some of Edward Bawden’s most recognisable public works include tiles for London Underground stations, such as Tottenham Hale tube station, and a mural at Morley College. His designs continue to be celebrated for their beauty and timeless appeal.
